Articles with size and colour variants and grid order entry in Odoo

One model, its sizes and its colours: Odoo creates one variant per combination, each with its own reference and barcode. Sales and purchase orders are filled in on a grid instead of one line per variant.

The process, step by step

Define the attributesTextys ships the Size attribute, from XS to XXL, and the Colour attribute, both with automatic variant creation. The company adds its own values under Inventory, Configuration, Attributes.
Create the modelOn the article, the Attributes and Variants tab takes one line per attribute with its values. Four sizes and three colours give twelve variants, created in one go.
Code each variantEach variant has its own internal reference and barcode. Odoo rejects a duplicated barcode within the same company and recognises valid EAN codes for labels.
Sell on a gridWhen the article is added to a sales order, the grid opens: sizes on one side, colours on the other. Quantities are typed in the cells and Odoo creates one line per variant with a quantity. The printed quotation can show the grid.
Buy on a gridThe supplier order uses the same grid, and the printed document can include it. The supplier price list can be set per variant, with minimum quantity and lead time.
Follow the variantThe sales line of a variant leads to that variant’s manufacturing order, with the bill of materials applied to that size and colour. Stock, reservations and moves are per variant.

What the user sees and does

Attributes and Variants tab

The article’s attributes, the values chosen and the button that lists the variants created.

Entry grid

A table of sizes by colours. The user types quantities and confirms; reopening the grid shows what has already been ordered.

Variant list

Reference, barcode and stock per variant, with filters by size and by colour.

Printed documents

The quotation and the purchase order can print the grid, so the customer or supplier reads sizes and colours in one table.

The data handled

product.attribute and product.attribute.value: the attribute, its variant creation mode and the values.
product.template.attribute.line with product.template.attribute.value: the values used by each model and the extra amount per value.
product.product with default_code and barcode: the variant, its reference and its barcode.
product.supplierinfo with product_id: the supplier list, per model or per variant.
sale.order.line and purchase.order.line: the lines created from the grid, one per variant.

Limits and what does not exist yet

The grid serves attributes that create variants automatically. An article with many combinations generates many variants; it pays to decide early which attributes are variants.
Odoo stores the barcode and recognises a valid EAN but does not assign it: the codes come from the company’s numbering body.
The names of the base values and work centres come in English and are renamed per customer.
The size series, where the company launches a total quantity split across a size curve, is in development and not available yet.

Frequently asked questions

How many variants can an article have?

Odoo creates one variant per combination of values. Rather than a fixed limit, what counts is the combination of attributes: sizes times colours times any other attribute that creates variants.

Does each variant have its own barcode?

Yes. The barcode and the internal reference are fields of the variant. Odoo rejects a repeated code in the same company.

Does the grid also work for purchasing?

Yes. Purchase orders use the same grid, with the option to print it on the document sent to the supplier.

Can I have a different cost or surcharge per size?

The sales surcharge is set per attribute value, for instance for large sizes. Material consumption per size is handled in the bill of materials, with lines applied to variants.

Does this require Odoo Enterprise?

No. Variants, grids and barcodes per variant are in Odoo Community.
