Garment bills of materials in Odoo, with consumption per size and operations per variant
One bill of materials per model serves all variants: each line and each operation can apply to certain sizes or colours only. The model’s cost is computed from the components and the operations.
The process, step by step
- Open the model’s billThe bill of materials is tied to the model and can be normal manufacturing, kit or subcontracting. One bill covers all variants, unless a separate bill is created for one variant.
- Enter the componentsEach line has the article, the quantity and the unit, for instance metres of fabric or buttons. A line can be consumed in a specific operation rather than at the start of the order.
- Apply lines to variantsUnder Apply on Variants, the line is limited to certain attribute values. Several lines for the same fabric with different consumptions, each for its own size, give consumption per size. With no value set, the line applies to all variants.
- Define the operationsEach operation has its work centre, its fixed or computed duration and its cost basis. An operation can also apply to certain variants only, such as an ironing step required for large sizes only. Operations can be copied from another bill.
- Build sub-assembliesA component can have its own bill. As a kit, its components go straight into the model’s order. As a manufactured article, with the Manufacture route and replenish on order, it has its own manufacturing order.
- Choose when production can startThe bill states whether the order is ready when all components are available or as soon as those of the first operation are, which allows cutting before the trims arrive.
- Compute the costA button on the article computes the cost from the bill: the components that apply to the variant plus the operations. The result is stored in the variant’s cost and can be recomputed when components change.
One bill, several variants
The same bill produces different orders depending on the variant: only the lines and operations that concern it are included.

Components tab
The lines with the Apply on Variants column, the unit and the operation in which each is consumed.

Each operation with its work centre, duration, cost computation mode and the variants it applies to.
A variant’s manufacturing order
The components and work orders already filtered for that variant, with no lines for other sizes.
Cost on the variant
The cost computed from the bill, stored in the variant’s cost.

Odoo modules
Community or Enterprise, according to the Odoo edition that ships the module.
| Technical module | Edition | Role |
|---|---|---|
mrp | Community | Bills of materials, lines and operations applied to variants, kits and sub-assemblies. |
product | Community | Attributes and variants on which the lines apply. |
mrp_ | Community | Computation of the variant’s cost from the bill of materials. |
textys_ | Community | The Size and Colour attributes and base work centres for operations. |
textys_ | Community | The agent proposes the bill of materials from the tech pack, for human review. |
mrp_ | Enterprise | Optional: versions and change orders of the bill, not included in Textys on Community. |
Limits and what does not exist yet
- Textys on Community has no bill of materials version management and no change orders. A change is made in the bill itself, and standard Odoo does not automatically log the history of lines.
- Operations log changes in their own history (work centre, duration mode, cost basis). Component lines and the bill’s header do not.
- The computed cost reflects the components’ cost at the time of calculation. It should be recomputed when component costs change.
- Fabric consumption per size is entered in the bill. Automatic grading from a size curve does not exist.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a different fabric consumption for each size?
Yes. Several lines for the same fabric are added to the bill, each with its consumption and applied to its size under Apply on Variants. Each variant’s manufacturing order includes only the line for its size.
Can an operation exist for some sizes only?
Yes. Operations have the same Apply on Variants field. An ironing step for large sizes only appears in the work orders of those sizes and not in the others.
Does Textys manage bill of materials versions?
Not on Community. Odoo’s modules for versions and change orders are Enterprise and are not part of Textys. A change is made directly in the bill.
How is a model’s cost obtained?
With the button that computes the cost from the bill of materials. It adds the components that apply to the variant and the operations, these at the work centre’s hourly cost.
Can an embroidered sub-assembly have its own bill?
Yes. As a manufactured article it has its own manufacturing order; if the embroidery is done outside, the bill can be a subcontracting one, described on the subcontracting page.
